Personal Specialism (cross with Research): Part Three: What is critical analysis?

Having hand my feedback for Part two, I understand this area to be one I need to work on. Thus before I begin any further research, I planned to get it into my own head what this means.  This will help me with both my PS course and Research as I need to action CA for both….Thus I am then qualified to use it…..

Rebecca Fairley and I discussed this and within my tutorial she explained what this involved.  However I wanted to do a little deeper digging and have a post on it which I could quickly turn to and reflect upon:

According to the university of Bradford, this thinking involves a three part step system, which Rebecca really covered, yet I will outline again:

  1. How something looks.
  2. How it works, can it be taken to pieces via observation?
  3. How it sits in line with other works – the contemporary or other setting?  In or out of a Textiles discipline?

I see that the key when auctioning CA is to:

Describe

What do I see?  What is the context?

Analyse

The why, how, what if area.

Evaluate

So…what does it mean, what is it saying….how can it affect my practice?

Goals when I am conducting this CA within my work:

  1. Read, think and research widely to glean a deep understanding of what I am talking about, without an imbalance of time and energy used.
  2. Identify the context relating to the topic I am looking at, where the thing I am analysing “sits” in relation to its perspective field.
  3. Relate other perspectives, but use my own opinions to make it personal. What do I see?
